About Andrea

Andrea Moore-Emmett, M.A., LMFT #97170Andrea Moore Emmett

I am a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist (LMFT) seeing individual  adults & couples.

My career trajectory from journalism to mental health was a natural evolution due to covering social issues & giving a voice to the powerless & dis-enfranchised.  I have always been interested in people’s stories & histories. As a journalist I witnessed the importance for individuals to relate their experiences, to be heard & understood. After several years in journalism, I returned to school & received my master’s degree in psychology from Chapman University. I have a bachelor’s degree in sociology which provides added perspective on how one’s outer environment interacts with, & impacts, one’s personal or inner (psychological) frame of mind. As a psychotherapist, I am able to help individuals further process their narratives in a confidential setting strictly meant for healing. Additionally, individuals learn tools & techniques for moving toward a healthy, quality of life.

In addition to numerous articles, I am the author of a book which chronicles the stories of women who were involved in several of a certain genre of cults in the United States. As a result of my book & articles, I was given the Award for Distinguished Service & Excellence in Journalism from the Leadership Council on Child Abuse & Interpersonal Violence & The Institute on Violence, Abuse & Trauma. My work on the subject of cult involvement continues to afford me opportunities to help in numerous ways on an individual level & contribute internationally through my involvement with cult studies. I have written for & been a speaker at international conferences examining cult dynamics & healing from the control & spiritual abuse that takes place. (For one example:  http://www.icsahome.com/events/localevents/cults-and-sex-trafficking )

My experience in mental health has included working for Riverside County Mental Health, Las Encinas Hospital in Pasadena & Briar Clinic, the hospital’s residential treatment center. In addition, I worked as a school based therapist for Chaffey High School District & at Spectrum, a non-public high school & middle school in San Bernardino. In my private practice, I help individuals managing post-cult life, individuals with depression, anxiety, & couples who are hoping to mend & strengthen their relationships. My work in cult dynamics also informs my ability to help those exiting & understanding controlling relationships.
